Opposition to Appointed Statewide Prosecutors and Full Funding of the Elected Attorney General (PRIORITIES)

The Republican Party of Texas opposes any proposal to create an appointed statewide prosecutor position that would duplicate or supersede the constitutional duties of the elected Attorney General and locally elected district attorneys. The Texas Legislature must instead provide full funding and staffing to the Office of the Attorney General’s public corruption and criminal investigations divisions to enable the elected Attorney General to prosecute violations of state law wherever local district attorneys decline to enforce it.

Note.

This legislative priority is supported by RPT Platform plank “Constitutional Issues – Preservation of Constitution,” 2.e. It does not duplicate any existing platform plank. This priority upholds the Texas Constitution (Article IV, Section 22; Article II, Section 1) as supreme, prevents practical perversion of the RPT Platform’s emphasis on limited government and separation of powers, and fulfills the Party’s core mission of protecting Texas families and citizens through accountable, elected enforcement of the law.
