Direct Election of the Texas Secretary of State

The Texas Secretary of State shall be elected directly by the people of Texas, and the Governor shall have no authority to appoint this officeholder; all vacancies shall be filled exclusively by special election to uphold the Texas Constitution’s principles of popular sovereignty and separation of powers, ensure full accountability in the administration of elections and vital records, prevent executive overreach that undermines election integrity and citizen rights, and fulfill the Republican Party of Texas mission to protect children and families through transparent and accountable governance.

Note.

This resolution does not duplicate any existing Platform Plank. It is supported by the following RPT Platform provisions: Preservation of Constitution, Government and Election Integrity (including the Elections section), State Sovereignty, and the Preamble and Principles (limited government power, personal accountability, and the solemn duty to protect the traditional family as the strength of the nation). It is further supported by Rule No. 4 of the Rules of the Republican Party of Texas, which adopts the Texas Constitution by reference.
